A Fantastic Night with the Bramhall and Woodford Rotary: Exploring “Gen AI” for Baby Boomers

Last Wednesday, I had the absolute pleasure of speaking to the Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club. This event felt truly special as it brought together people who dedicate their time and energy to serving others, and I loved having the chance to give back in some small way.

The invitation came from the lovely Pat Holmes (wishing you a speedy recovery, Pat!), and from the moment I walked into the room, I was struck by how warm and welcoming everyone was. It didn’t feel like a formal meeting; it felt more like a family gathering. The room was buzzing with energy, and the atmosphere was friendly and open.

What made the evening even more remarkable was the diversity in the room. The group ranged in age from bright university students to a sharp 92-year-old gentleman who was as curious and engaged as anyone else there. It’s not often that you see such a wide spread of generations coming together to learn about the same topic, but this was the perfect example of how technology can unite people, no matter their age.

Record-Breaking Attendance

The Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club pulled in a fantastic turnout for this event, with a total of 33 attendees. Twenty-two people joined for a delicious meal beforehand, while another eleven arrived after dinner just for the talk. It was a record-breaking attendance for the club, which made the evening feel even more exciting and worthwhile.

The topic of the evening was "Gen-erational AI," a name I coined to reflect the generational diversity in the room and how AI is impacting people of all ages.

Demonstrating Gen AI in Action

One of the highlights of the evening was a live demonstration of how AI tools can be used to simplify everyday tasks. I showed how the entire meeting could be recorded and summarised in just a few minutes.

Watching everyone’s reactions was priceless. Local GP, Harry Hill, the club’s minute-taker, looked both amazed and possibly a little worried about being replaced! I reassured him that AI isn’t here to take jobs—it’s here to make our lives easier.

Enthusiasm and Curiosity

The audience’s enthusiasm was absolutely infectious. They were full of thoughtful, engaging questions about AI and how it could fit into their daily lives. This kind of curiosity and open-mindedness is exactly what makes speaking at events like this such a joy.

What really stood out to me was how familiar many attendees already were with AI. Around 95% of the room said they were actively using AI tools in some form, which was a stark contrast to the younger students I usually teach, who tend to be more cautious about embracing the technology. It was refreshing to see so much curiosity and willingness to learn from this group.

The second comment from Pat Holmes says, 'Super cool,' and the third, from Bramhall and Woodford Rotary, reads, 'A really interesting talk from a mega enthusiastic speaker. Well done 😀,' with a heart reaction.

Amazing Food and Hospitality

A big shout-out to The Pointing Dog for providing such amazing food and making the evening even more enjoyable. The venue added to the warm and welcoming atmosphere that made the night so memorable.

Key Takeaways

As I left the event, I felt energised and inspired by the people I’d met. Their enthusiasm reminded me why I love doing what I do—connecting with others, sharing knowledge, and learning from their perspectives.

Events like this are so important because they bring together people from all walks of life, encouraging discussions about how we can embrace new technologies in ways that are meaningful and beneficial. It was wonderful to see how open-minded and engaged everyone was, regardless of age or background.
